The Wonder Number Lessons
Lesson No. 3: Addition, SingleDigit Addition is joining two or more addends or groups to find a sum, and the Wonder Number Board provides students with a concrete picture of this concept. Introducing addition in a way that lets students see that the numbers themselves represent actual chips will make it easier for them to grasp this vital operation. It will also help them with the commutative property which states the order in which you add numbers does not change the sum. The first problem is to add zero and one on the board. Start by placing one yellow chip on 1 and then write on a piece of paper the problem 0 + 1 = 1. The next problem involves adding zero and two on the board. Start by placing two yellow chips on numbers 1 and 2. Write 0 + 2 = 2. Then take one blue chip and place it on 11 and place one red chip on 12. Write 1 + 1 = 2 (see fig 21). The following problem involves adding zero and three on the board. Start by placing three red chips on numbers 1, 2, and 3. Write 0 + 3 = 3. Now take two blue chips and place them on 11 and 12 and one red chip on 13. Write 2 + 1 = 3. Then take one green chip and place it on 21 and two blue chips and place them on 22 and 23. Write 1 + 2 = 3 (see fig 22). Continue building these patterns for all single digit numbers up to nine. Make sure you emphasize the order of addends does not change the sum. Another addition problem involves adding three single digit numbers to get a double digit sum. The three numbers are 4, 5, and 3. Start by placing four red chips on 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then add five green chips to 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Finally, add three blue chips to 10, 11, and 12. The student will discover the answer is 12 (see fig 23). To selfcheck, lift up the last blue chip and verify the answer. To continue practicing addition using the Wonder Number Board, try the following examples: 6 + 7 = 13 Place six blue chips on blocks 1  6 and seven red chips on blocks 7 – 13. The student will discover the answer is 13. To selfcheck, lift up the last red chip and verify the answer. 9 + 3 = 12 Place nine blue chips on blocks 1  9 and three red chips on blocks 10  12. The student will discover the answer is 14. To selfcheck, lift up the last red chip and verify the answer.
